In the old town of Las Palmas, in the Vegueta quarter, stands the Casa de Colón, one of the city's most beautiful buildings. It is a Canarian colonial palace, with courtyards, carved wooden balconies and decorated doorways. Today it is a museum devoted to the link between the Canary Islands and the great ocean explorations. Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed here in 1492, when the building was the governor's residence, before setting off for the Americas.
