The Barranco de las Vacas is a small sandstone canyon in the southeast of Gran Canaria. Its smooth, wavy walls, in tones from orange to red, recall an American West landscape, yet sit just minutes from the road. Still little known, it can be visited slowly and almost in silence.

Getting there
The Barranco de las Vacas is near the village of Temisas, on the GC-550 road linking Agüimes with Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
- Follow the GC-550 to a small white bridge, between km 14 and 15.
- Park carefully: there is no official car park, so leave the car by the roadside without blocking traffic.
- Beside the bridge you'll see a small gap in the guardrail: the path starts there.
- Walk down a few metres on a dirt trail and follow the dry riverbed for about 100 metres to the canyon.
Useful tips
- Route: about 500 metres round trip; a 30 to 40 minute visit.
- Difficulty: easy, though the initial descent can be slippery.
- Avoid going after rain: the canyon can fill with water.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the ground is uneven.
- There are no bins or facilities: respect the place and take everything with you.
- Best light for photos: 9:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 until sunset.
