Guayadeque opens up in the eastern mountains of Gran Canaria: a wide, green, untamed ravine, known for its ancient caves carved into the rock, its natural scenery and an unusual experience, dining inside a cave. It’s a quiet, little-touristed place that still holds a link to the island’s history and traditions.
At a glance
Why it’s worth a visit
- The landscape is spectacular, with rock walls and lush vegetation.
- There are still-inhabited caves, once used by the Canarian aboriginals.
- The trails are easy and give fine views over the valley.
- You can eat in a restaurant carved into the rock, an experience hard to forget.
Dining inside a cave
Guayadeque’s best-known restaurant is Tagoror, built inside a cave. The mood is simple but atmospheric: stone walls, soft light and views over the valley.
A few things to try:
- Papas arrugadas con mojo, the typical potatoes with Canarian sauces.
- Grilled meat, slow-cooked and full of flavour.
- Grilled cheese with palm honey, an island classic.
- Bienmesabe, an almond-based dessert.
The house wine is often served in earthenware jugs. It’s best to book if you want dinner.
Walking the surroundings
If you arrive before dinner, you can take a walk nearby:
- The aboriginal caves trail, which passes among caves carved into the rock.
- A viewpoint over the valley, with a wide, evocative panorama.
The routes are short, suitable even for those who aren’t used to walking.
Getting there
By car it’s about 30 minutes from Las Palmas and 20 from Maspalomas, following the GC-100 to the mouth of the ravine. By bus, lines connect Agüimes and Ingenio, with stops near the barranco.
