Pozo Izquierdo

Southeast coast of Gran Canaria

Pozo Izquierdo lies on the southeast coast of Gran Canaria. It’s one of the best places in the world for windsurfing, thanks to the strong wind that blows almost all year. Professional athletes train here, and it hosts one of the Windsurfing World Cup events.

Why visit Pozo Izquierdo

  • The wind is steady and powerful, perfect for windsurfing.
  • Every summer the World Cup takes place, with athletes from all over the planet.
  • There are windsurfing schools for every level, including complete beginners.

If you visit Pozo in July, you can watch the most important competition of the year. Even off-season, it’s easy to find professional surfers in the water. And if you want to try, there are trusted schools such as PozoWinds, where you can book single lessons or longer courses. Just walking along the beach and watching the surfers in action is a show in itself.

Where to eat

After a day on the beach, you can stop at Restaurante El Viento, popular with surfers and locals alike.

On the menu you’ll find:

  • Fish tapas, such as grilled octopus and fried squid.
  • Burgers made with local ingredients.
  • Cocktails and beers with ocean views.

If you can, go at sunset: the views are truly beautiful.

Getting there and tips

By car: 15 minutes from the airport and 25 from Maspalomas, via the GC-1.

By bus: lines connecting Pozo Izquierdo with Vecindario and Las Palmas.

On foot or by bike: if you’re nearby, a walk along the coast is perfect for discovering the island’s wilder side.

Tips:

  • The wind is usually strong almost all the time: for calmer conditions, go in the morning or in winter.
  • Bring your camera: the moving sails and the waves make for spectacular scenes.
  • It isn’t a beach set up for sunbathing, but it’s perfect if you love sport and the energy of the ocean.
